What's the best mattress for this bed?

We would suggest a pocket spring mattress with a quality filling like memory foam or cotton and wool. Check for the depth as to not intrude the  foot board. This bed has a slatted base so the foundations going to be supportive perfect for a medium tension sleeping surface.   

Is wood a good material for storage beds?

Wood is strong and robust just what you want for storage beds lasting a long time is advantage. The wooden material is also easy to clean and maintain perfect for bedroom furniture.  

Are the drawers easy to access?
